Geography

We aim to deliver a high-quality and challenging geographical education, which will inspire curiosity and fascination about the world and its people.

The Geography learning journey at The Roseland will equip students with a knowledge of the location of diverse places. A range of physical and human features will be studied, some being on a small scale to others being on a global scale. Case studies will be selected from areas across the globe including countries in various stages of development. An understanding of how these features have been shaped by physical and human processes will be explored. The subject material covered will involve famous geographical events and whenever appropriate lessons will be adapted to incorporate current world events. As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world will help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of varied landscapes. Students will appreciate how landscapes can change over time, considering different viewpoints on the benefits, issues and possible solutions for the future. Students will be able to develop well-evidenced arguments drawing on their geographical knowledge and understanding.

Whilst studying the different topics, students will develop lifelong skills fit for the 21st Century.

We aspire to develop global citizens who recognise the responsibility they have to other people as well as to the sustainability of our planet, in a rapidly changing world.
At Key Stage 3 we follow the National Curriculum. The course commences with an introduction to Geography. Locational knowledge is gained by using maps and atlases to explore our local area through to the entire world. Students alternately explore physical and human topics, such as tectonic hazards to population.

The department uses an inclusive variety of teaching styles and all modules are fully differentiated. The department has included much ICT in schemes of work to make the most of the department Chromebooks. Geography is best delivered beyond the confines of the classroom.
